Medical Malpractice

Medical Malpractice Attorneys Against Nursing Home Malpractice

We expect our loved ones to be treated with the utmost care and respect at nursing homes. Patients deserve timely medical attention from trained professionals who have their best interests at heart. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. There has been a disturbing trend of medication errors, infections, and other types of medical malpractice caused by professionals at nursing homes. These are not isolated incidents, but a widespread problem that has resulted in terminal illness, severe injury, and even death.

Our medical malpractice attorneys are dedicated to helping families recover from nursing home malpractice.

According to a report published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, one out of three nursing home patients are victims of malpractice. Of these cases, it was determined that almost 60 percent were preventable. In August of 2011 alone, the study projected that 1,530 patients nationwide died due to nursing home malpractice, while 21,777 suffered an injury. Nursing home malpractice is commonly caused by failure to provide care, delayed or substandard treatment, misdiagnosis of symptoms, and inadequate monitoring. Fatalities due to malpractice result from fluid imbalances, blood clots, and side effects of blood-thinning medications.

Shorter hospital stays for patients is one of the biggest reasons why nursing home malpractice has increased. Many patients are prematurely discharged from hospitals when they still require intensive medical care. Patients over the age of 65 then seek additional treatment at nursing facilities. According to the study, nearly 20 percent of Medicare patients in 2011 spent time in both a hospital and nursing home. However, most nursing homes are not equipped to provide long-term intensive care. This inadequate care can result in the deterioration of a patient’s health and can even lead to death.
